PostHeaderIcon Christian Hedberg appointed new Head of Unit for Macedonia in DG Enlargement


Today, Brussel's insiders reported that Christian Hedberg, deputy head of cabinet of EU Commissioner Kuneva will be appointed Head of Unit for Macedonia in the DG Enlargement. Hedberg, who is well known for his outstanding record in politics, is said to have close links to Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.

It is expected that the new Head of Unit will be carefully optimistic towards Macedonia's EU membership.

The Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) offers rationalised assistance to countries aspiring to join the European Union for the period 2007-2013 on the basis of the lessons learnt from previous external assistance and pre-accession instruments. The aim of the IPA is therefore to enhance the efficiency and coherence of aid by means of a single framework. This framework incorporates the previous pre-accession and stabilisation and association assistance to candidate countries and potential candidate countries while respecting their specific features and the processes in which they are engaged.

PostHeaderIcon PROGRESS programme

PROGRESS is the EU's employment and social solidarity programme. It was established to support financially the implementation of the objectives of the European Union in employment, social affairs and equal opportunities, as set out in the Social Agenda. It also contributes to the achievement of the EU 'Lisbon' Growth and Jobs Strategy.

Working alongside the European Social Fund (ESF), PROGRESS started in 2007 and will run until 2013. This programme replaces the four previous ones that ended in 2006 covering actions against discrimination, equality between men and women, employment measures and the fight against social exclusion. The EU opted for a single programme to rationalise and streamline EU funding and concentrate its activities to improve the impact.

"Enlarge your vision" is the motto of this year's EU Commission Young Journalist Award. Articles on on issues close to EU Enlargement can be submitted until 31. May 2009, Eligible candidates are young journalists aged between 17 and 35 who live in the EU, the candidate countries or potential candidate countries. Here is what the Commission writes on the award:

From 2 February 2009 – 31 May 2009 young journalists aged 17 - 35, citizens or residents of the 27 member states of the EU or the candidate and potential candidate countries, are invited to participate in the 2009 European Young Journalist Award.

About EUSEW
Under the umbrella of the Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign (SEE), the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy and Transport, the European Institutions and major stakeholders concerned with sustainable energy are together putting on the third edition of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). It will take place in Brussels, Belgium, and in other cities across Europe from Monday 9 to Friday 13 February 2009, although many side events are foreseen during the weeks immediately before and after.
The EUSEW is the key annual reference point for sustainable energy issues in Europe. The events organised during EUSEW cover key topics that highlight the multi-sectoral nature of sustainable energy development and stress the need for everyone to work together towards a common goal.
