PostHeaderIcon New participating country in the Europe for citizens Programme: Republic of Macedonia

The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is an eligible country within the Europe for Citizens programme as from 19 March 2009.
A Memorandum of Understanding with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia allowing its participation from the budget year 2009 has been signed on 19 March 2009 by an exchange of letters . Participants from this country are therefore eligible for all the application deadlines after 19 March 2009.
The Europe for Citizens programme aims to give the citizen a key role in the development of the European Union. Between 2007 and 2013, its four action areas will provide strategic direction and funding for the task of bringing people closer to the European project.

The Flemish Government has decided to continue providing considerable financial means to consolidate and further establish relationships with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe through project cooperation.
Since 1992 the Flemish Government has financed project cooperation between Flemish promoters and partners in Central and Eastern Europe in the framework of the Cooperation Programme.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs is a pilot project initiated by the European Union (EU). It aims at helping new entrepreneurs to acquire relevant skills for managing a small or medium-sized enterprise (SMEs) by spending time in a business in another EU country. It contributes to improving their know-how and fosters cross-border transfers of knowledge and experience between entrepreneurs.

On March 6th, the Forum Skopje will start with its second edition. Here is what the organisers tell us:
Forum Skopje 2 - “European Cultural Dialogue” brings together representatives of civil society, culture, business and policy-making at the local, regional and European level, including members of the European Parliament and the European Commission. The Forum explores how to foster innovative forms of cross-border cooperation and sustainable structures between civil society and policy-makers.. The Forum Skopje participants will discuss the European responsibility and challenges of cities and regions, and the role of culture and civic initiatives in building democratic structures and fostering the economic and social upswing in Europe.

PostHeaderIcon Macedonia's EU ambitions suffer a blow

Ethnic violence marred the first ever early parliamentary elections in Macedonia on 1 June and represented a heavy blow to the country's aspirations to join the EU and NATO, world agencies reported.

Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's conservative VMRO-DPMNE party won the elections, riding on a wave of nationalism over the 'name dispute' with Greece. His main rival Radmila Sekerinska from the Social Democratic Union (SDSM) conceded defeat, but added that the price Macedonia had to pay is too high. With 97% of the votes counted, VMRO-DPMNE secured 48.21% against 23.19% for SDSM. Gruevski said he will have over 60 deputies in the 120-seat assembly.

PostHeaderIcon Western Balkans still way off EU entry criteria

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn made clear yesterday (5 November) that Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Kosovo, are still a long way away from getting clear persprectives of EU accession. Presenting the European Commission's progress reports on candidate countries and potential new entrants to the European Parliament, Rehn made a clear distinction between Croatia and the remaining Western Balkan applicants.  Alluding to Winston Churchill, who once famously said "the Balkans produce more history than they can consume," Rehn said there was "no end of history for the Western Balkans".

Macedonia has its sights set on opening membership negotiations with the EU and NATO this year, goals that hinge on two main criteria. One is the country's local and presidential vote, scheduled for March 22nd. The other is a solution to the ongoing name dispute with Greece. Both present serious challenges.
